Becoming a Kiwi
By exploring immigrant stories from the African, Asian, Continental European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern backgrounds, we want to create knowledge and awareness about immigrant journeys to New Zealand.
The Outcome
We aim to highlight not just their journey to New Zealand but also how they are contributing towards communities they are part of and what connects them to being “kiwi”.
The project is currently work in progress with an anticipated launch date of all immigrant stories in October 2021.
We managed to complete 28 stories which are showcased on the project website and the project team spent 2120 hours working on Immigrant Journeys.
Immigrant Journeys was very well received by the community. All our stories were promoted through a website and social media.
Given our funding was constrained and we received only half of what we had requested, we could only complete half the stories.
Immigrant Journeys was also showcased as an exhibition at Canterbury Museum (Feb-Mar 22) and Christchurch City Libraries (Apr-May 22). The website continues to gain viewers through the exhibition displays. Future exhibitions are planned at Selwyn District Council, Waimakariri District Council and Te Papa.
The project was one of the finalists in the PMINZ's ESG project of the year in 2024.
“Since its launch in late October 2021, Immigrant Journeys has received an average engagement time of 8 minutes per story and more than 25,000 website views.”
